Hartleys of Eskdale
(very definitely incomplete!)
At the time of the Percy Survey of 1587 there were at least seven Hartley
families in Eskdale:-
Nicholas Hartley (of Peel Place)
Gilbert Hartley of Boot
Richard Hartley and his son Nicholas of Boot
William Hartley of Borrowdale Place
John Hartley (of Church House?)
John Hartley of Bank House
Nicholas Hartley of
Langrigg
Green
How closely these Hartleys were related is unknown. Tracing the descendants of
them is obviously prone to error. 'Obvious' conclusions can often turn out
incorrect. Wills have given many of the most reliable relationships with the
parish register of St Catherine at Eskdale providing baptismal and marriage
dates.
I hope to get more information in due course from manorial records.
I have not attempted to follow the Hartley descent beyond about the middle of
the eighteenth century.
I would like to acknowledge the immense help that I have obtained from Neville
Ramsden's indices to the parish registers and to Copeland wills. The latter is
available from the Cumbria Family History Society; the former can be consulted
at Whitehaven Record Office.
