Frequency / Distribution of the Swindell surname

Distribution of Swindells in 1881

No Swindell or variant has been found outside Cheshire in a sample of the lay subsidy rolls (1290-1334) or poll tax (1377-1381). Because taxes in Cheshire at this time were raised by a different system (the mize) rather than per person, there are no equivalent name lists for Cheshire for this period. However this lack of examples of Swindell outside Cheshire, together with the 1881 distribution, strongly argues for a Cheshire origin for the name.
